Maybe you did not know that editing your WordPress Permalinks is good for SEO purposes. And, you can certainly make the http:// of your website much more readable for visitors and also increase the chance to be found in search engines if you edit them well. Here we provide some very great tips if you also want to improve the permalinks of your own website.
You can edit the Permalinks of your website at your adminpanel. You’ll have to look beneath Settings on your dashboard and then click at the tab ‘Permalinks’. On this page, you will find 5 options to set up your permalinks. If you need further assistance, read more because here we give you a couple examples. Then see for yourself what happens.

WordPress Permalinks - the finishing touch

To help you edit your WordPress Permalinks we start of of with an example. Go to common settings and click on Month and Name and see what happens. You’ll see this structure appear beneath custom structure: /%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/

If you want your http:// link to resemble the page/post name you gave you will have add the following structure under Custom Structure: /%postname%/ Your links will appear like http://www.yoursite.com/contact etc.

After you have saved this and everything went well, your wordpress permalinks are working. But, if you get an error that tells your .htaccess is not write-able, you’ll have to follow these steps:

Copy and paste the given code from WordPress. Open an text, edit the text program-like, Notepad or Text-edit. Paste the given code from WordPress in the text-file and save it. (it does not matter if it is saved as a .txt extension)
Upload the text file into the root directory where you’ve installed WordPress and rename it into .htaccess. When you rename it, please use a .txt/.doc extension or otherwise. Reload your admin panel and you will be up and running now.

NOTE:
If you still get an error, then follow these last steps because maby some code is still present in your .htaccess that cause that WordPress can not read it properly.

Go to your ftp and locate the .htaccess (it may not be visible because it’s a hidden file). In this case you go to the preferences of your ftp and set: Show hidden files. Now you are able to see the .htaccess file. Click and choose: Edit with Notepad, TextEdit or Dreamweaver etc. Select and delete all code and then you copy and past the code from WordPress that still is in your computers memory. Save the file and you’ll see a prompt of your ftp program saying ‘uploaded successfully’. Then reload your admin panel and your site should be back and running with WordPress permalinks and you have reached your finishing touch.
