We noticed this also, it will appear but when you try to place to thumb in the center it will not work. We used gravatar.com and now the avatars shop up the right way.

The guys over at Buddypress are already aware of this issue, so I hope it’s fixd in the next update they bring out.

Rebecca, I’m having the same issue on my site and on another buddypress site that I admin. Hopefully it will be fixed soon, but I’m sure buddypress will handle it and then we’ll get a buddypress update and potentially a MikMag update if the buddypress update conflicts with current MikMag.
