It’s all several of my pages – but for instance the Women’s ministry page here http://treasuring-christ.org/womens-ministry/ shows all posts in the slider, when it should be showing only this category http://treasuring-christ.org/womens-ministry/
It’s the same on this page as well – http://treasuring-christ.org/mens-ministry/ where it should just be showing that category alone. Any ideas or suggestions would be really appreciated!

Do you mean the recent posts displayed via shortcode, on the page? Or were you looking to get a latest posts slider in the page header?
-

Yes, I was using the shortcode – and it was originally just showing posts for specific categories. The shortcode still has the category name listed, but it is showing all posts instead of the post categories.
Example [thumbnailslider category=”in-womens-ministry” background=”#fff” textcolor=”#000″ number=”20″

If it used to work and then started doing something different, something must have changed somewhere. Either in the shortcode (this example misses a “]” bracket, but that could just be the copy-paste missing that, other than that, the link to the category might’ve been broken by renaming the category or perhaps something has changedin the shortcode itself. Another possibility would be something in the page interfering with this shortcode in some way. You could try copying this shortcode to an empty page to try if that does anything.

Hi Kevin, I did try that. I think the issue started after installing the last updated version. I haven’t renamed any of the categories, and I tried a new page, and it still does the same thing. Any other suggestions?

That is fairly odd.. I’ve tried this on our test page but didn’t get any issues whatsoever. Have you got any plugins installed that might do something with the categories and might interfere?

I had deactivated all of the ones that I had activated recently, but none of them directly affect categories. I’ll go through one by one until they are all deactivated, and see if i can rule something out.

Hi Kevin, I’ve also done this on a fresh install, (test site) with WordPress 3.5 because it is the current version available in the install.

I use WordPress 3.5 as well.

This might be a WP3.5 incompatibility issue then. We’re working on updating all the themes to be compatible with WP3.5, which with a lot of themes, proves to be quite a job. I’ll add this to the list of things to check in the updating process.

It is not. I downgraded to WP 3.4 and the problem is still the same. And I found out that the problem seems to be bigger than just the short-code. There seems to be somthing wrong with MikMag and catogories in het geheel (don’t know the english word) There are problems with a lot of other plugins (like “auto prune”) choosing single catergories with Mikmag running. PLEASE don’t tell me that its working on your own site. -This is not helpfull. THX

Hello,
Same problem here on the latest WP version, suspect it’s the theme after reading this thread. I have tried to isolate the content of the thumbnail slider by using the category ID, the slug name and the regular name. It’s not working, it will still show ALL posts no matter what.
I Came here looking for a fix. Please help.

Hi Justin,
This issue should be fixed in our upcoming theme update, it’s on our developers’ to-do list.

Hi ThemeDutch and Whitt Madden
Is there an interim solution for this issue as it is critical for my site that I can isolate individual post categories and only show selected categories in the post carousel rather than all of them. I looked at your site Whitt and from what i can see you have mananged to get the men’s ministry page to only show men’s posts. Did you find a solution or what please? If we are reliant on the updated MikMag when will this be available please?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Gail, I am currently testing the NoTime theme and that is why you see the categories working now. The only way to get this to work in MikMag is to downgrade to WordPress 3.4.1 or wait until the update comes for MikMag and the 3.5 compatibility.

Hi Theme Dutch and Whitt Madden
Thanks Whitt for your response to my earlier query re this issue. I understand you have had to change theme in order to display only the category you require rather than all categories in the carousel.
This is not possible for me – my site is live and I am committed to using MikMag.
Theme Dutch is there any way i can hack the code to display ONLY the category I select in the carousel please. I am happy to go under the covers and change whatever is required as I cannot wait any longer for the new 3.5 version for this to be fixed.
Thanks and regards.

I am also having this exact same problem. On both my sliders on pages (using the shortcode) and also in my sidebars, it doesn’t seem to matter that I specify a category — it just shows every category.
There seem to be a LOT of things the developers need to do for this next update. Is there any way to fix this now? I’m having a ton of problems with this theme and the response unfortunately is usually “We’ll fix that, in the future!” Argh… I would expect that this particular problem would have been reported often, early, by many.

Oh I forgot to mention, I’m using WordPress 3.4.2 (I also had to downgrade my WordPress for compatibility with this theme)

Just noticed this thread was started almost a year ago… I don’t think a fix is likely to come anytime soon.
I am really deeply regretting my purchase of this theme and I’m stuck now, with not enough time to start another (which I’ll have to do anyway). I shudder to think how much time and money/opportunity this theme is costing me before I’m finished with it.

I also asked this question over on another thread where I was having a different problem in the hope i could get both questions answered at the same time. Here’s Kevin’s response on the other thread:
“I’m afraid that code-based support requests exceed what we can offer as free support. We’ve also been doing quite some recoding on the mikmag theme as well as its framework so getting back to that exact problem would be rather difficult at this point.”
So that response now begs another question from me…
If i pay for support will you provide me with the code I need to hack this myself – or not – as clearly there would be no point in paying for support if I am going to get the same answer – no you cannot help me and I should simply to wait for the update.
If on the other hand paying for one quarter of support is likely to elicit support to enable me to get this fixed quickly, I would gladly pay it.
Last comment from me today is of course – when is the update coming please?
Regards
Gailstorm

I understand paying for premium support for specialized things beyond the theme’s advertising features, but they’re selling a badly broken product, and charging us to fix it so it works properly? That doesn’t sound like good business.
I’ve seen no ETA yet for an update, and MikMag is still not compatible with WordPress 3.5 yet. I’m getting the feeling we’re on a sinking ship.

Dear Kevin,
This is the shortcode appearing on my home page, calling the thumbnail slider (and posts from the category “bars_slider”):
[thumbnailslider category=”bars_slider” number=”24″ background=”#CCC” textcolor=”#000″ words=”21″]
Is there a snippet of code that could be added here to EXCLUDE certain categories? Although this should be calling only posts from the bars_slider category, it’s displaying ALL categories. My sidebar also disregards the category distinction and simply shows everything.
Does anyone know? Thank you! (I’m using WordPress 3.4.2)

Hi Rich,
That looks right, for reference, this is the one we’re using in the demo:
[thumbnailslider category=”life-style” number=”20″ words=”10″]
Pretty much the same, as you can see. I do believe the categories in there are case-sensitive that can sometimes happen to show all categories.
I’m afraid there’s no function to exclude categories.

I would remind you that on Themeforest your demo site thumbnail slider shortcode page says quite clearly, that posts from a particular category can be shown in the slider – which is one of the reasons I purchased the theme. Here is the exact wording :
Thumbnail Slider
You are here: Home Features Thumbnail Slider
Want a slider with the latest posts from a particular category with a thumbnail? This shortcode is right for you. In addition, you can limit the number of posts and the number of words. You can select the background and text color too! Please can you confirm that this issue is being addressed in the forthcoming update as this functionality is central to my use of the theme.
Thanks and regards
