Hi, love the MikMag theme but have some trouble using the Basic Slider. When I use a featured image in my post that has a normal aspect ratio, the image is distorted in the slider. I checked on your demo site and you are using images of 750 x 250, however for my client to have to crop their images first before they’ll show up properly in the slider, is not an option. Also, the image quality is greatly reduced when stretching an image of 750 x 250 into the basic slider.
How can I ensure that my images look crisp and high-res as in your demo site without having to crop or resize an image taken with a normal camera aspect ratio?
Thanks,

Every single image I load up is cropped so it has no stretch just because of this issue, it takes awhile! Instead of calling out every single problem on here though I just do my best to make things work. And if an image is too small I keep it small and add another image next to it.

To fill out a set space with an image that originally has a different aspect ratio, the image will have to undergo some changes.
EXAMPLE:
If you’ve got a space that’s 500 x 250 to fill, but have an image of 500 x 500, obviously, half of the image (250 on the y axis) will be cut off. If you would resize it (keeping the same aspect ratio) to fit the 250 in this y axis, you will get (500 x 500) /2 = 250 x 250 size. Your space to fill is 500 x 250 though, which means that you will now have 250 space left on the x axis, causing you to have an image with a lot of empty space on both sides.
Now one thing you could do is crop the image to 500 x 250 and make it look nice for such a size, then it will be displayed just correctly on that size. The other thing is to stretch-resize the image. This will pull it out of the original aspect ratio, in this example case, making it twice as broad before equally scaling the image down to fit the space. The image will automatically look distorted due to the aspect ratio change.

Thanks Kevin for your explanation and I do understand how it works, I just don’t understand how you got it to work on your demo with the featured image looking crisp and sharp both in the latest post slider and in the actual post.
Here’s an example of mine:
http://cafedwaesj.nl/wp/voor-iedereen-toegankelijk-verenigingsavond/
I’ve just uploaded a featured image which is 4000 x 3000 – which is far too large but I was hoping I might not lose any resolution. The featured image shown above the post is actually reduced down to 266 x 200. In the latest posts slider the largest image is used but it is squashed down according to your above explanation.
My question is: HOW can I ensure that both the latest post slider AND the featured image above post have an acceptable resolution and aspect ratio? I’m at a loss to figure this one out. 🙁
In your demo you seem to use only one image of 750 x 250 which I have tried also, so why doesn’t it work for me?
I hope you’ll have another look at this.
Thanks,
Louise

OK – I worked it out. Was using full page width for my blog posts which stretched the featured image too much. Now have sidebars in all my blog posts and the featured image itself is 1140 x 300 which is the width and height of my latest posts slider. Now all looks good!
Thanks for your response.
