Hi,
Firstly, a suggestion – could you please install a “search” option for your forums. The normal page search does not find anything and I am reluctant to post something here which has already been answered. I have gone through all of Mikmag’s forum messages and have not found anything on this, so here goes:
Site URL: http://cafedwaesj.nl/wp/
My blog post page is defined in settings as: http://cafedwaesj.nl/wp/dwaesj-nieuws/
I have created this page and have added it to my main navigation menu.
I am trying to add a latest posts slider to the top of this page, but it appears that having set it as the default Blog page, none of the Mikmag page settings such as adding a slider or a sidebar seem to take effect.
Is this something that I can get around? I would really like my latest posts slider at the top of this page.
Thanks,
Wizard247

Hi,
It looks like you’ve managed to get the slider working, are you still running into any problems here?

Hi,
Yes, I managed it but kind of by accident. I can only get the latest posts slider to appear on top of my blog page if I have it selected as appearing on top of a random blog POST.
I had it selected on top of my blog PAGE but that didn’t do it. Then I picked one post and enabled it at the top of that post, thinking it was only going to show up on that one post, but that made it appear on top of the blog PAGE.
I’m happy it works and generally have to congratulate you on an excellent theme. I have been working with WordPress for some time now and haven’t found a theme that is so comprehensive and easy to manipulate as yours. I will definitely come back for more!
I have also posted a message regarding “Latest post slider word count takes letter count instead” – I have been trying to get my head around this one as WordPress by default is supposed to take word count and have only been able to find advice on people wanting to change this to character count, but your theme actually SAYS in the configuration of the slider that it takes Word Count, but then in actuality the number I put in, i.e. 120, gives me 120 characters and not words and therefore breaks off a word halfway. Any thoughts on this one?
Thanks again!
Louise

Just to add to this: It turns out that the latest posts sliders ONLY appears on top of the blog page if the most recent post has the slider added to it.

Hi,
The slider for the page that contains the list of posts (so basically, the category) can be set in Appearance -> Mikmag -> Categories. In here, select the category you are looking to change and add the slider there.
As for the word count vs character count, I will be passing this on to the development team so they can take a little look at that and make it clearer what’s going to happen.

OK – I got around the word/character count issue by limiting the number of characters to 190 in the slider settings and ensuring that there is a proper excerpt for each slider post. I tried installing several plugins which are supposed to show a character count under the excerpt box but for some reason none of these worked. May be incompatible with the theme. It’s now a trial and error thing. Would be good if this could be incorporated as a suggestion?
As far as adding the slider to the category is concerned – the page is actually the “blog” page set in WordPress native Settings section, so not really a category as such. I’ve added the slider to one category, but this doesn’t make it show. Do I need to add the slider to every category in order for it to work?
Thanks,

The category settings affect the front page of a category. which is how blogs were intended with Mikmag, make a category, add posts to it, customize the category settings and add the category to your menu. Building your blogs this way should work properly (including the slider). If I don’t misunderstand, you have currently linked your posts to a page to display the blog? Swapping this page for a category should solve it all then.
