Are there any guidelines for the images to best optimize for the background images? Pixels, JPG level, etc.?

Hi Bettie,
You'll want to keep your image size (width+height) large and your filesize (KB / MB) small. Those would be the basic guidelines. For information on how to achieve that, you will want to find for example photoshop help on websites like Adobe's or other website offering photoshop support.
