Let my try to guide you to achieving this type of homepage, It shouldn’t be too complicated.

The homepage is made using a category. This category will hold several posts, each of this posts being one of the images you see appearing in the so called boxes.

First, create a category under posts->categories

Then create a post. Make sure you select a featured image for this post (that will be the image displayed in the box) then secondly make sure to assign it to your newly created category.

This way, create as many posts as you would like to have boxes on your home page.

Now when you’ve got some of your posts assigned to the category, go to the theme options located under appearance -> James. There go to the “Home” tab and select “Boxes” in the first dropdown selection box.

In the secend selection box, select your newly created and populated category, save and save everything.

Now the last step is to make sure you have your homepage set to display “latest posts” for this, go to settings -> reading and check the radio button that says “your latest posts”

You should now have a boxes style homepage.
